Contest Winners and Other News

Two of DeVane's images were winners in the 2005 North Dakota Outdoors annual photo contest. The poster winner was this photo of a blister beetle on a flower, taken in early July 2005 near Lake Sakakawea.
This photo of a pair of American avocets in fall plumage, taken in September of 2005, was a runner up in the contest. Both of these photos were taken with the North Dakota Outdoor's photo contest specifically in mind. This color photo looks like a black and white image due to the nearly complete lack of anything other than shades of gray when the photo was taken. These avocets have pink heads in the spring, but have almost no color in their fall plumage. These two images were among those selected from over 400 entries to the North Dakota Outdoors contest.
The Fall 2005 issue of Natures Best Magazine displayed this striking photo of a cedar waxwing, taken by DeVane late in 2004. This image received a "highly honored" award in the "backyard wildlife" category. This bird was part of a flock that were working over the remnants of some berries in a front yard tree. It was nearly -20 degrees F. when this photo was made, and the normally smooth waxwings were fluffed up to fight the extreme cold. 131 images were selected for the 2005 Nature's Best Magazine photo contest out of over 12,000 entries from 27 countries.
Other contests wins during the past year included the annual North Dakota Water Magazine contest, along with other local contests.
